Exhibition Date: July 20 – August 31 2019, 10 am – 7 pm
Venue: Lucie Chang Fine Arts
L+/ Lucie Chang Fine Arts is pleased to present a trio exhibition, titled Lucid Dream, of three creative and talented female artists from Asia, Alice Lin (Beijing), Miloza Ma (Hong Kong) & So Young Lee (Seoul). In Shakespeare’s plot, midsummer is a time for dreams, dreams that ought to be dramatic yet enlightening. How are we enlightened in dreams? Aristotle attempted to capture that very fragile condition about dreaming: ‘Often when one is asleep, there is something in consciousness which declares that what then presents itself is but a dream.’ As such, dreams are not always about creating bubbles. Dreams take one’s consciousness too. And they call it lucid dream.
Consciously dreaming results in vivid colors and surrealistic imagination. Alice Lin, rooted from the traditional technique of Gongbi, combines human figures, plants and animals into different shapes of creatures. Miloza Ma distorted shapes of the characters in the artist’s dreamland. On the other hand, genderless figures in So Youn Lee’s works are innocent and joyous. The three artists consciously create dream-like stage for the characters to act in their own dreams.
Alice Lin (Beijing)
Alice has a passion for new Chinese meticulous painting and 3D-projection art. She first fell in love with the technique when she was a child, inspired by Chinese tradition techniques and Surrealism. Alice is recommended by The Taiwan DPI magazine Art Quarter in 2015 and by Collaboration Tongue magazine (Mexico) in 2016. The WOWXWOW Gallery and Art Community in Scotland also recommended her in the same year.
So Youn Lee (Seoul)
So Youn Lee is best known for her bright and dreamy canvases with use of stickers and glitters. Influenced by popular cultures such as comic books and animated films, Lee presents a unique cartoon-like aesthetic. Solo exhibitions of Lee took place in The USA, Korea and Philippines, whereas she has been featured in numerous group exhibitions internationally. Her latest project is ‘Meteroroid’ (2019), a figure based on her genderless character, Mango.
Miloza Ma (Hong Kong)
Miloza is an artist/ designer based in Hong Kong. Inspired by comic culture and UFO theories, Miloza places emphasis on her characters’ eyes, resulting in surrealistic yet mysterious figures. Her artist career started since 2013. She was selected as one of the ‘Top Ten New Forces in 2015’ by ‘East TOUCH’ and as ‘AAD 2016 Asia Outstanding Illustrator Collection’. In 2017, she was invited by Hong Kong Art to participate a group show in Helsinki. Solo exhibitions have been held in Taiwan and Hong Kong. In 2019, Miloza took part in ‘Beautiful Land’, a publication project featuring 9 Hong Kong emerging artists.
