A Conversation with Jonni Cheatwood

Over the Influence is pleased to present Jonni Cheatwood in conversation with Dr. Kathleen Wyma, professor from Department of Fine Arts, The University of Hong Kong, about the artist’s newest works from his upcoming solo exhibition. Titled “Dressed Up for the Letdown”, this exhibition will open on 1 November at Over The Influence, Hong Kong, and it will be the artist first solo exhibition in Asia. Focusing on the artist’s thematic exploration of tension and nostalgia, the conversation will delve into the artist’s creative process and inspiration, while stimulating an exchange of artistic insights between the two guests.

Jonni Cheatwood is a Brazilian-American visual artist born in 1986 in Thousand Oaks, CA. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA, USA. His workshave been exhibited at the Rema Hort Mann Foundation, New York, NY, USA, and at various galleries internationally.

Cheatwood’s body of works encompasses a broad range of visual ideas, stemming from still-life, abstraction and minimalism. Combining different materials — found, gifted, and custom-made — he creates a patchwork backdrop of sewn fabric as the basis for his expressionist canvases. Layered with nostalgic meaning, these works explore the tension among marks, mediums, colors, composition, and time.

Dr. Kathleen Wyma is a visiting professor in Department of Fine Arts, HKU. She obtained her MA and PhD in University of British Colombia. Dr. Wyma specializes in contemporary global, modern and South Asian art and American art.
