Join Galerie Ora-Ora for an artist talk with Liu Qi on 23rd October (Wednesday), 5-7pm. Coinciding with his first solo exhibition with the gallery, the artist will not only speak in depth about his own artistic practices, but also explain the history of figurative style from different countries – particularly how portraits and its styling have influenced eastern philosophy and contemporary aesthetic standards.
Understanding the significance of the figures within Liu’s paintings is the first step to recognise his artistic approach. The figures within his paintings are often shown with no emotion, while faces, bodies and movement are depicted without many fine details. Instead, the artist focuses on stylistic elements, like the hairstyles and clothing, drawing attention to these accents – the true focal point of his paintings.
Liu’s works imply a sense of “quietness”, “control” and “calmness”, which is representative of the eastern “zen” quality. He once said, “Life is not tasteful until people use their passion to experience the hidden meaning within. Painting is also the same, it requires people to openly feel with their hearts.”
About the Exhibition
Galerie Ora-Ora is pleased to present contemporary ink artist Liu Qi’s first show at the gallery. Titled, Sanctuary, the exhibition name pays homage to Liu Qi’s studio name and also references the artist’s fondness of traditional tea culture. Inspired by the Buddhist saying, which loosely translates to, “there is only one sanctuary for me in this multifarious world”, Liu believes that having one singular pursuit is the best way to peruse one’s passion in life. Through this exhibition, audiences will gain a more definitive understanding of the figurative style and furthermore be exposed to the traditional culture of appreciating eastern aesthetics.
