Ben Brown Fine Arts announces their fifth time participation in Art Basel Hong Kong since the fair’s inception in 2011, with a presentation of works by some of their most celebrated artists including Candida Höfer, Claude and François-Xavier Lalanne, Gavin Turk, Ron Arad, and Vik Muniz.
Forbidden City (2014) by Brazilian artist Vik Muniz will be shown to the public for the first time at the fair. The piece is part of the ongoing series, Postcards from Nowhere, featuring large-scale colour photographs based on iconic landmarks around the world. Muniz creates these images using scraps of postcards, which once collaged together suggest a tactile, impastoed surface. His distinctive technique gives a delicate impression of the Beijing palace, a small nod to the second stop of his travelling retrospective Pictures of Anything, the artist’s first solo exhibition in China, held in Shanghai last year.
Israeli artist, designer, sculptor and architect Ron Arad is known for obfuscating the boundaries between art and design. In Rod Gomli (2009), one of Arad’s striking sculptural pieces, the artist continues his ever-evolving reinvention of the chair. The sculpture is based on the human figure, featuring a negative impression of an invisible sitter, the ‘everyman’. Composed of polished stainless steel and bronze rods the piece has a jewel-like quality intensified by the shimmer of light as the weighted sculpture rocks.
A further highlight on the stand will be the new work Pavlovks Palace Pavlovsk IX 2014 by Candida Höfer. This imposing photograph captures one of Russia’s most important 18th century imperial residences and is part of Candida’s new St.Petersburg series in which the artist characteristically documents historic buildings including The Hermitage, Yusopov Palace, Mariinsky Theatre and Catherine Palace. The complete series will be featured in a solo exhibition devoted to Höfer at The Hermitage Museum in St.Petersburg, opening in June this year.
