Presented by Karin Weber Gallery, Black + White is a group show highlighting the works of international artists relying on the simplest of color palette: black and/or white. These works bring into question the whole notion of color and the nature of its employment when in the hands of the artist. Simultaneously vivid and devoid, Black + White is a study in contrasts and the encumbered gaze in an overly saturated world.
About the Artists
Brainrental, a Hong Kong-based emerging art group, presents a camera in white cardboard in Leica M4-2. The film compartment is turned into a painter’s studio to illustrate the influence photography has had on painting.
Chilean-American artist Luca Cruzat works in the medium of print drawing but complicates the process by using human hair with strained precision. Her work Cuando Miro el Agua (When I look Into Water) is a study in the beauty of a simple black line.
Glass Gellage XLI, by Czech artist Michal Macku, surprises the viewer with traditional photographic techniques combined with state-of-the-art glass making. Under Machu’s direction, the human figure, formed by a series of repetitive and manipulated black and white images, is pure poetry.
German-born artist Udo Noger’s abstract works highlight contrasts between light and shade while creating a sense of fluidity and movement. In Wartend (Waiting), white light is revealed in its truest sense; its physical manifestation and its inherent spirituality.
Phaneendra Nath Chaturvedi, an Indian artist, uses the simple medium of pencil and paper in order to depict the complex realities of contemporary life. In Appear Disappeared, the artist borrows an anthropomorphic theme in order to explore human strengths and weaknesses in a modern world.
