“Precision, patience, and a keen eye for detail are the keys to a successful painting.”
Every single line and stroke in Chen Xi’s and Law Yat Sun, Oscar’s drawings are done free-handed; to this day both artists remain true to this fundamental ideal. The series of drawings have homogeneity in style, while each is in fact unique in itself. Both artists strive to combine the elements of Asian and European art traditions.
Chen Xi has been continuously working on his “perfect-in-form” ink-pen drawing for over a decade—seems as if the shape already existed in the core of the paper and Chen purely helps it to develop. The technique of plume drawing is based on traditional Chinese art. The abstract forms are drawn with ink pen is made in the tradition of European art history, which radiates perfection and elegance. As for Chen’s paint-brush works, Chen mainly works with paper and mixed media, often entirely in black. Indian ink, acrylic, oil… basically anything that produces this special effect desired by intuition. The paintings are a spontaneous montage of extremely thin and painted paper on canvas, and the robust splashes reveal his energetic and resolute character.
Law Yat Sun, Oscar dedicated himself to focus on charcoal powder drawings since 2011, his commitment to mastering charcoal powder in his paintings is determined and full of passion. He devoted himself to integrating various methods and techniques from Chinese and Western art theories, in addition to the use of optical theory, he also takes artistic and medical anatomy and Chinese Face Reading theory as references to bring his large-format portraits to perfection.
The artworks and the exhibition serve to convey an experience of utmost patience and detail. Through their meticulously drawn works, we can see the fine approach of both artists. It’s almost a way of taking all of those features usually not valued, magnifying them, and giving them a reality. It also gives them an ideality.
