Hot Summer, cool Art – with new Pop and Street Art paintings by Szabotage (UK / HK), Norman O’Flynn (South Africa) and the first two paintings by our new Hong Kong artist Michael Andrew Law, a group exhibition which will last until 5 October 2022.
Szabotage is a visual artist, street artist and designer, who has become a prominent figure on the local Hong Kong art scene since his arrival in Asia five years ago. Inspired by Hong Kong’s iconic style of urban architecture and emotive streetscapes, his pieces incorporate bright neon colours mixed with popular culture references. Through his artwork, he explores themes of personal freedom with a humorous play on words.
Norman O’Flynn has a deep understanding of the pop art tradition and explores the meaning of this genre in today’s context. Daily encounters with people and media are his creative inspiration. The state of humanity is questioned and interpreted in his work with ironically portrayed by playful and harmless manner, an intentional cynical and dark sense of humour.
Michael Andrew Law’s paintings are easily recognised for their juxtaposition of their visual elements of popular culture, including popular icons in contemporary art history, luxury brands, reinterpreted NFT, advertising, comics, Hollywood stars, celebrities and Millennials culture such as taking selfies. For Law, painting is a medium that works as a commentary on contemporary culture. Combining Pop Art, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism, Law uses a humorous way to connect popular culture from low art to high art, commercial art to fine art, and past to present.
