Galerie Koo is delighted to announce its exciting exhibition “Duet” by Kathy Fung and Wong Kai Wong (Owen), Hong Kong contemporary ink artists. Featuring for the first time at Galerie Koo, Kathy and Owen will bring their own world views to art lovers through their individual contemporary ink approach.

Contemporary ink has been influenced by Western art styles, bringing a breath of fresh air to traditional Chinese ink and wash. The spirit of contemporary ink is to interpret the long-standing Chinese culture in its own way and tell a unique story without being bound by tradition.

Both FUNG and WONG are contemporary ink artists from Hong Kong. Growing up in Hong Kong, a unique place regardless geography, culture and academic background, both Fung and Wong have a different way of thinking and interpreting the world.

FUNG believes that art allows her to truly portray the splendour and beauty of the world. The use of Japanese gold paper, combined with an imagery full of colours, creates unforgettable works that reflect the artist’s positive and optimistic attitude towards life. Her artworks are rose-tinted lens as well as love letters to the places she had visited, bringing out the importance of cultural preservation and heritage by depicting the landmarks and signatures during her travels.

WONG uses the ocean and the infinite universe as his main subject matter, and reflects his emotions through ink and wash, combining the concepts of “floating life” and “harmony” with a positive outlook on life and the natural expression of emotions. Ink allows him to explore freely in art and have a clear vision of the future. He created the his own “皴(chow)” method to accurately portray the imagery in his mind. There are certain conditions for the creation of a “皴(chow)” method, including innovativeness, uniqueness of technique, and compatibility with the artworks’ concept. The artist hopes that the viewers will be inspired by the endless power of the ocean and the universe, and that they will reflect on the various aspects of life.
