In March 2019, Kwai Fung Hin Art Gallery is delighted to present Zhang Gong’s solo exhibition “Beyond Description, Beyond Boundary”.
Known for his playful yet metaphorical imagery that finds references in cartoon characters, Zhang Gong explores the relationship between East and West, popular culture and the modern social environment and conveys his deep concerns and reflections on the rapid social transition in the world.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Kwai Fung Hin will organize a lecture “Cartoon and Fine Art: the Experience of Asian Artists” on March 25, to introduce the development of cartoon as a form of visual expression, and to explore the influence and characteristics of the artistic concept and language of Asian artists under a contemporary global culture.

About the artist
Born in Beijing, China, in 1959, Zhang Gong graduated with an MFA from the Central Academy of Arts and Design in 1993. He is currently a Professor at the Information Department of Art and Design at Tsinghua University in Beijing.
As early as the 1990s, his paintings were exhibited at important exhibitions in Belgium, Germany and across Europe. His works are collected by important museums including M+ Museum, Hong Kong, the Burger Collection, and Asia Society Contemporary Art Collection, New York. From 1999 to 2009, he produced five hand-painted animated films which were highly praised in many international animation festivals in France, Belgium, Rome, London, Japan, etc.
