Exploring the liminal space between abstraction and representation, Sam Friedman presents a new body of work for his first solo presentation in Hong Kong. Friedman’s works are executed freehand with no use of masking, projecting, or sketching. Paint is applied to canvases with a brush, and the paintings develop and grow in an organic manner, with each decision responding to the sequence of decisions that has already been made and executed on the surface.
Friedman has produced paintings for the greater portion of his life, that concern themselves primarily with the formal aspects of paint, tools and surfaces, as they relate to the scale of the human body, while occasionally touching down to get blessed, tainted, or both, by the non-linear narrative of life. Friedman’s paintings pilot a plane that takes us from the ethereal planes to the earthly plains, on a ride that is neither past or present, but timeless, accessible, and transformatively escapist. His new work continues to explore these themes, creating a surreal world through dreamlike paintings that serve as re-imaginings of memory, forever tussling between representation and abstraction.
