A2Z Art Gallery is pleased to present French Artist Gaël Davrinche’s solo exhibition《Primitive Heritage》in Hong Kong, on show from September 9th to October 20th. It will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong.
Gaël Davrinche is born in 1971 in Paris, graduated from Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris in 2000. He now lives and works in Paris. Artist valued greatly the pictural experience he retrieved from Beaux-Arts education; however, he is able to look beyond the superficial visual perception, but consult to his more pure inner emotions. Portraits, powerfully extend over canvas, are used as means to launch a interrogation on humanity,
《Kalashnikov》started from 2013. In this series, Gaël Davrinche deconstruct human faces then reform them, implying that minds are not to be read from the appearance. Underneath that well-suited human-shaped shell could be lying the most ferocious beast, waiting on opportunity to devour rationality of human nature. The year 2015 is rather eventful in France, from Charlie Hebdo to Nov 13 Attack, artist sensed the insecurity and confusion of the collective, and started the large-scale oil painting series《Under the Skin》,which is his most most recent portrait practice. Artist try to observe human from a more global perspective, and to demonstrate the sensitive and complicated side of human soul.
Artist analyzed humanity via painting. The visual representation close to primitive art creates a certain ambiguity and gravity that subtly yet directly questions the audience: who deconstruct eventually, the human or animal side of human nature? Beasts deconstruct for food and territory. It was human who deconstruct for the desire to conquer, and to dominate.
