With “Homage to Körin,” Takahide Komatsu brings ethereal Japanese Rinpa school-inspired paintings to Fabrik Gallery. We welcome you to join us for a glass of wine and enjoy these wonderful works at the Opening on Thursday February 18th.
Founded in Kyoto in the 17th century, the “Rinpa” style of painting used vibrant colors applied in a highly decorative and patterned manner to simple natural subjects such as birds, plants and flowers. The background was often kept minimal and filled with gold leaf. The form was later revived and given a stronger sense of design by Ogata Körin (1658-1716). Rinpa, meaning “School of Rin,” was named after Körin.
Drawing from the Rinpa school and from his own acute observations of nature, revered Japanese artist Takahide Komatsu brings together the traditional background patterns of shimmering gold and silver leaf with detailed depictions of native plant and animal species in bold, vibrant colors.
