Massimo De Carlo is pleased to present Something you can’t leave behind by Lee Kit, who was born in Hong Kong in 1978 and now lives and works in Taipei (Taiwan). This is Lee Kit’s first solo show with our Hong Kong gallery, in his hometown.
The multimedia artist Lee Kit encompasses in his practice an array of diverse mediums such as projections, drawing, painting, video and installations. Lee Kit’s works embed intimacy and poetry through the artist’s close yet reserved exploration of human behavior that voices universal feelings whilst stressing on particular experiences, moments and traces of everyday life.
The title something you can’t leave behind speaks directly to the viewer, as put by the artist himself: “I simply feel that we all have something that we cannot leave behind in our life. I wasn’t quite sure what it is this something. Perhaps it is not something very specific. In the current worsened, very tense global and local situation in Hong Kong, I have a stronger feeling that we all have something we can’t leave behind.” The show is composed of projections that interact with works on paper, cardboard, and plywood, created specifically for this exhibition, which reinterpret and challenge Lee Kit’s background as a traditional painter. The work is conceived as site-specific, appearing to encompass the gallery space as if it were a sole work: an illusion carefully crafted by the artists assembling of different works. The shift between the light created by the projectors and the shade of the darkened gallery space aide the artist to craft a narrative that, by physically transforming the gallery, inserts the viewer into a humbling limbo caught in between empathy and apathy, a quiet and repetitive sense of nostalgia that asks us to reflect on our relationship with our homeland.
Lee Kit was born in Hong Kong in 1978; he lives and works in Taipei. He obtained an MFA in 2009 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and in the same year was one of the finalists for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize 2009-10.His work has been shown in prominent institutions such The New Museum Triennial, New York; Tate Modern, London; Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; the Ullens Centre of the Arts, Beijing, China and the Kathmandu Triennial. Lee Kit represented Hong Kong at The 55th Venice Biennale. Being extensively collected worldwide, his work is featured at important public collections such as Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Ghent; Daimler Collection, Berlin; DSL Collection, Paris; M+ Museum of Visual Culture, Hong Kong; The Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis.
