Essence Talk Series – Medical and Art Sharing

While medicine cures the body, art heals the soul.

Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences and Galerie Ora-Ora are excited to present Essence Talk Series – Medical and Art Sharing during the month of August.  In the four upcoming talks, medical professionals will explore various medical- and health-related topics, which closely relate to Zhang Yanzi’s exhibition at the Museum.

Essence is a rare crossover exhibition that interweaves modern and ancient medicine with contemporary art.  Having spent a summer at the Museum as an artist-in-residence, Zhang was deeply touched by the strife, rigor, breakthroughs and passion behind the medical history of Hong Kong.  As a result, Essence presents a new body of artwork, which not only blends art and medicine on both visual and philosophical levels, but also demonstrates the artist’s perspective on the journey of life, from birth to decay, through pain and remedy.

Date: August 16th, 2016 (Tuesday)

Time: 7-8 PM

Location: Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, 2 Caine Lane, Mid Levels, Hong Kong

RSVP: [email protected]

The first talk within the series discusses the evolution of medical equipment design within Hong Kong, while taking an in depth look at Zhang Yanzi’s artworks “Sanctuary” and “Scar”. These two works were both inspired by a surgical bed from the Museum’s collection.  With its design originating from the 1940s, this particular delivery bed was commonly used in Hong Kong until the 60s.

As medical equipment is designed entirely for functionality, the objective of the original design is not beauty.  The shape of the medical bed is a result of its purpose, and it is this logic and rationality which makes it “beautiful”.  Captivated by its unique form, the artist draws a direct relationship between the bed and pregnancy.  Adorned with her iconic analgesic plasters and gauze bandages, and decorated with images of natural beauty (including herbs from the museum’s garden), “Sanctuary” and “Scar” not only elevate a ready-made piece of equipment to an object of wonder, but also express the artist’s admiration and respect for women.

HKMMS and Galerie Ora-Ora are delighted to invite Ms. Wah Kit Ying (Trained Nurse/Midwife and Retired General Manager of Nursing, United Christian Hospital) to further explore the story behind these artworks from the perspective of medical science.  By understanding the features of this antique surgical bed, audiences will not only experience a part of Hong Kong’s medical history but also explore the delicate relationship between life and pain.
