Opera Gallery Hong Kong presents “In Dialogue with Creatives – Inspirations of the Next Generation” a series of talks to be hosted to gather an insight into local talents. In collaboration with Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), the second edition we invite Professor Stephen Thorpe, Professor Stephanie Kaplan and Artist Ira Almeda, the Hong-Kong based Filipino artist representing the new generation of artists inspired by the 20th century masters.
The emergence of young artists show the indisputable impact by the masters. Alongside with the special collaboration with SCAD to showcase Ira Almeda’s work, Opera Gallery is showing Abstraction Athwart Worlds: Ties Between Modern Worlds, a concoction of artists from the East and the West during 3 – 24 October, 2019. The curated exhibition showcases renowned Chinese artists including Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun and Feng Xiao-Min, along with their Western cognates, Pierre Soulages, Hans Hartung and Jean-Paul Riopelle. This exceptional conspectus of abstract artworks and artists aims to provoke your imagination and interpretation in respect to the connectivity between masters of the arts and young artists of the generation.
On 9 October, you are invited to join us for an evening talk followed by a Q&A session as we discover how Ira incorporates her Filipino background, through the integration of historical concepts with contemporary artistic methods, to shed light upon the spectrum of its history and colonisation. Her work “Kawalang-tinig ng Isang Henerasyon / Lost Voices of a Generation” combines the ancient Baybayin scripture with the modern alphabet, drawing both ancient and modern Filipino history to truly depict the coexistence of the old and the new.
