Simon Lee Gallery is proud to present British artist Toby Ziegler (b. 1972) for his first solo show in Hong Kong opening on Tuesday 13th May. His work alludes to the processes by which images and artefacts become eroded and reproduced across historical periods and translated in different media. Toby Ziegler’s new body of work is concerned with the relationship between control and abandon. These oil on aluminium paintings are built up into intricate landscapes before Ziegler ruptures the painted image and surface by applying an electric sander and disturbing the illusion of coherent space. The works both occupy and explore the field between formal composition and its collapse, where shapes and patterns are disturbed by gestural smudges and sprays. Confronting the idea of memory in an age of digital technology, Ziegler’s practice is rooted in art historical representations that are subsequently sabotaged and re-interpreted. Featured in major public and private collections worldwide such as the Tate Britain, François Pinault Foundation and Kadist Art Foundation, Ziegler has also had solo exhibitions in institutions such as the Zabludowicz Collection in both Sarvisalo and London, Parkhaus im Malkastenpark in Düsseldorf, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki and the Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai.
