Art Experience Gallery proudly presents Unity, a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Chinese artist Na Wei. This is the artist’s second solo exhibition at Art Experience Gallery in Hong Kong, which features Na Wei’s most recent series of paintings Jiang Shan and The Difference in Temperature.

In these latest works, Na Wei suggests the concept of Unity, which he puts forward the ideas of wholeness and balance to achieve an aesthetic of harmony. Various Eastern and Western mediums and techniques are applied in his works, Na Wei intends to speak more diversely in his paintings, while he dissolves and reconstructs different elements on canvas as an approach. The images interlace perspectives with imaginary space and two-dimensional components to weave a multilayered visual experience, which characterized by different styles and narratives. The diverse variety of expression and dialogue in his works creates complex and rhythmic dimensioned images. Na Wei’s main exhibit series entitled Jiang Shan in the exhibition shows very well how the artist performs a mixture of traditional and modern elements in his paintings. Images of bamboo and lotus are painted with Chinese ink on silk that mounted on canvas, however, his interpretations are different from the Chinese traditional literatipaintings. Na Wei’s freehand brushstrokes of xieyi and distorted shapes resulted in the dynamism of his painted landscape. Blue-and-white stripes cut across the surface of his painting to give rhythm and flow to his work, contrasting the forceful and bold of his waves and peculiar stony ears, yet the contradiction between these elements harmoniously creates a multi-dimensional visual perception. Different visual dialogues are combined and arranged in a chaotic way, Na Wei however has performed a perfect balance between the opposites and reinterpreted the aesthetics of yin and yang. The diverse of language speaks to the complex social environment in today’s China, which integrates the traditional and modern conflicts into unity.

For the very first time, Na Wei is going to show his The Difference in Temperature Series to the public in this exhibition. In this series of work, an object is painted on a single-colored background in the style of minimalism. The artist intends to take away the pure materiality of the paint and brushstrokes, and to keep the audience focused on the object itself. The complex and exquisite threads of paint are weaved into embossed folded sweaters, the extraordinary textures being achieved by Na Wei, however, gives an interesting response to his idea of minimalism. These realistic, soft and colorful “clothing” may remind the audience of their past memories of warm and cold. From Na Wei’s Being Squeezed Series (2013 – 2016) to his newly presented The Difference in Temperature Series, he has demonstrated how art and craft can be spoken together as a powerful language, which have both offered great inspiration to the artist himself.

About Artist

Na Wei (b.1982, Liaoning, China)

Na Wei was born in 1982 and graduated from the Luxun Academy of Fine Arts, with both a BFA and an MFA. He was born in a small city of Northern China named An Shan, an important city for the output of steel. As an ethnic minority, he chooses the form of carpets as a cultural symbol in his early Being Squeezed Series (2013 – 2016). These works seem, at a first glance, to be normal woven carpets. However, as one looks closely, one realizes that they are paintings: the extraordinary textures being achieved by Na Wei squeezing the paint from the tube directly onto his canvases. Such paintings of carpets are a meeting of art and craft. There are also his latest The Difference in Temperature Series, which are other fine examples of his ‘squeezed’ technique.

In Na Wei’s Unity concept paintings, the artist attains a reconstruction of a visual dialogue by experimenting a collage of different media, technique, culture and style. “My intention is to create a visual experience of the East and the West and to make an impact between the two different languages,” says Na Wei.
