Following ‘Nine Abysses’ in May, Hong Kong artist Chui Pui Chee once again presents a solo exhibition – ‘Eighteen’ at Touch Gallery, which showcases the most representative series of works from his artistic career in the past eighteen years, including early calligraphy of pop songs, termite, ants, and even the ink paintings inspired by ‘Batman’. He learns from the ancients and innovates, presents his unique style with sophisticated insight and perception.

Chui studied calligraphy under Professor Jat See-yeu and Professor Wang Dongling, it established a solid foundation for his calligraphy. Chui received his BA from the CUHK Fine Arts Department as well as MA and PhD from the Calligraphy Department at the China Academy of Art in 2007 and 2010 respectively. In 2012, he won the Young Artists Award in the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Awards 2012 with ‘Wyman Wong’s Lyrics “TourBillion” in Running Script’, and he has received public recognition widely as an artist since then. His unrestrained and powerful calligraphy interprets contemporary Cantonese lyrics intriguingly. Chui constantly experiments with various themes, pursuing breakthroughs and exploring possibilities of artistic expressions, while he utilises traditional ink painting to depict popular culture and the life course of insects. He is inspired by the surroundings in our daily life, and tells stories of modern people through his artworks.

In this retrospective, the audience can understand Chui’s creative context and artistic orientation comprehensively, how he creates from life and illustrates a portrayal of reality. The accumulation of the artist’s long-term artistic practice and life experience, with his passion for creation and life, shows everyone his fascinating artistic path.
