Fung Ming-Chip’s long-awaited solo exhibition, MEME, provides a comprehensive insight into the artist’s decades-long exploration of the history and philosophy of the written word. In conversation with Catherine Maudsley, Fung will discuss his sources of inspiration and the exhibition’s wide range of media: steles, sculptures, calligraphy, ink paintings, seal carvings, engravings on mixed media and stop-motion animation.
About Fung Ming Chip
Fung Ming-Chip was born in 1951 in Guangdong, China. He moved to Hong Kong in 1956 and to New York in 1977. Since 1986, he has been living between New York, Hong Kong and Taiwan; he settled in Hong Kong in 2006. Self taught, Fung’s decades-long quest to extend the conceptual field of Chinese calligraphy began initially with his work in the related art of seal-carving. He has exhibited internationally with a major retrospective of his work held in 1999 at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. He was Artist in residence at Cambridge University, and has work included in major private collections and public institutions internationally. In 2014, he completed After Mi Fu Handscroll, Response to Mi Fu’s Boat on Wu River, commissioned by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY, USA.
About Catherine Maudsley
Catherine Maudsley is a Hong Kong-based art historian, art advisor, curator, educator and writer. She has lectured for global forums and a wide range of institutions, including the Department of Fine Arts at the University of Hong Kong; the HKU Space Executive Programme with Art Basel and Central Saint Martin’s; Hong Kong Art School; Christie’s Education; Sotheby’s Institute of Art and UBS Art Education Series. Maudsley has acted as a moderator for the Asia Society, Christie’s Forum, L’ECOLE Van Cleef & Arpels and many others. She has also published widely, including Arts of Asia, the Asian Art Newspaper, Orientations and has contributed to and edited a number of art related books.
