de Sarthe is pleased to announce its fourth annual de Sarthe Artist Residency (deSAR) as well as its resident artist, Mark Chung (b. Auckland, New Zealand 1990. Lives and works in Hong Kong). During the residency, the artist will create entirely new artwork using the gallery as his studio, which will be open to the public throughout normal gallery hours. deSAR runs from 15 July to 4 September and will culminate in a short exhibition opening September 5th.

During the residency, Chung will build a series of multimedia and sculptural installation artworks that transforms the gallery space into a disorienting and hostile immersive experience. Developing from his past works such as Sweet Light (2019) and Crippling Light (2019), which were exhibited at Tai Kwun Contemporary in late 2019, he will continue to experiment with lights as well as air, sound, and objects. Drawing inspiration from both historical and current events, Chung intends to stage a confrontation of the various forces existent in Hong Kong.

About deSAR

Inaugurated in 2017, de Sarthe’s open-studio residency takes place in the gallery’s 10,000sq/foot space in Hong Kong’s art district, Wong Chuk Hang. In a city known for excessively high rent and exceedingly small spaces, the residency allows Hong Kong-based artists the freedom of a large arena to explore their creativity and actively encourages audiences to witness as well as potentially participate in the process of making art. The residency program aggressively challenges the conventional transition of dynamics between artists’ studios and galleries–subverting both the notion of privacy within creation and altering the nature of a gallery space.
