‘Harmony’ is the overriding theme of Chinese ink artist Li Ting Ting’s second exhibition at Karin Weber Gallery. Be it a violin or a solitary person communing with nature, the current focus in her signature still-lives and landscapes is on emotions of tranquillity, equilibrium and joy.

With the evolution of her individual style to include relief and space, Li Ting Ting successfully creates dimensions and viewpoints that pique the viewer’s curiosity and imagination. Says the artist, “Since 2017, I have been attempting to incorporate a three dimensional element to my paintings.  Space in conventional landscapes has been de-constructed and replaced.  The interplay of positive and negative three dimensional spaces challenges viewers in their visual judgement… The traditional mode of presentation and viewing of Chinese ink painting is being challenged here, allowing  space to create its own interpretation.”

Layering of images to create a complete composition is a critical element of the artist’s style, just as music is composed using different notes. Images of a violin or the God of Fortune are painstakingly layered. Not only does this polyphony-like approach create effects of ups and downs but it also suggests dimensions of time. They are not only layers of images, but also layers of time which help to create an unknown, infinite, deep and abundant world.

Whilst exploring the theme of ‘Harmony’ in her landscapes, the artist celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the past and attempts to pay homage to master ink painters such as Dong Qichang (1555 – 1636) and Tang Yin (1470-1524) yet her contemporary execution and technique reveal a firm step into the future.   Constancy and change are both reflected in a nuanced manner in Li Ting Ting’s delicate and celestial creations that blur the boundaries of traditional ink painting and Pop Art, two genres that have greatly influenced the artist.

About the Artist:

Born in 1982 in Shanxi, China, Li Ting Ting graduated with a BFA from the College of Arts, Shanxi Normal University, China in 2004. She pursued her studies to obtain a MFA from the College of Art, Renmin University of China in 2007. The artist currently lives and works in Beijing. During her ten years of art practice she has achieved a considerable mastery over her medium and techniques. Her love for fashion and unique combination of modern subjects with a traditional technique has resulted in a bold and “cool” evolution of Chinese ink painting. Li Ting Ting has succeeded in creating a niche and reputation for her work both locally and internationally. She had staged a solo exhibition at Liu Haisu Art Museum in Shanghai in 2018, and her paintings are in the collection of Today Art Museum in Beijing, The Origo Collection and White Rabbit Gallery in Sydney.
