Only by abandoning the idea of the supremacy of all things and by living in reverence with nature can one realise that we humans are insignificant in the face of the great creator of nature, and only then can we truly be in dialogue with nature on an equal footing and accept all the bounties that nature bestows on us.
“Through the beauty of heaven and earth, unfolds the principle of all things.”
Brenda Hong’s landscapes are odes to nature, where her inspiration is derived from the awareness of nature and life. She believed we ought to rely on the observation and understanding of life to discover living sensory entities before internally transforming them into subjective emotions, which are expressed as unique forms and substances on paper through ink and colour.
The content of Brenda’s works is mostly the affection and inspiration that she had when she engaged with nature. Just like the moment when she wandered through the mountains, the emotions triggered at that instant, are expressed by using brushstrokes to convey the natural texture, giving a deep demonstration of space, momentum, vibrancy and rhythm that are hidden in the nature of the landscape. The process of creation seems to be a kind of restoration of nature… and a kind of spiritual healing. Brenda aspires to convey her reverence and appreciation towards life. This is both an intuitive experience of life in the real world and one of the feelings she most wanted to realise in her work. She hopes the viewer can feel the traces of time and a sense of life that she would like to deliver through her paintings.
The “Mountain Wandering” series manifests Brenda’s expression of monumentality in her landscape. Rather than painting the landscape in a panoramic view, the artist delineates the mountains, and mountain ranges, in close-up details to create a harmonious beauty of sublimity and vastness. As if leading the viewers on a journey of self-reflection, Brenda paints a personal and philosophical dialogue between man and nature.
