“I am a committed believer in an art form called crafts. This art form is not an escape from life but life itself.”
— Takeshi Yasuda
“No Boundaries” is the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong of works by world renowned ceramic artist Takeshi Yasuda, proudly presented by Yan Gallery jointly with ZHEN Porcelain. This exhibition brings together major works of his recent Qing Bai porcelain series created in Jingdezhen, China. The artist will be present for an opening reception at the gallery on Thursday, 26th November from 6-9 PM.
Born in Japan in 1943 and living and working internationally, Takeshi Yasuda has established a remarkable and enduring reputation across the world as a ceramic artist and teacher of great imagination and integrity. In 1973 Takeshi moved to UK and resided there for 40 years. Since then he taught at various art schools and universities all over the world including Royal College of Art and China Academy of Art. Many people have been influenced and affected by him and his inventive, thoughtful approach – with his words of encouragement and innovation often remaining fresh in their minds for decades.
From 2005 until 2010 Takeshi served as director of the Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, helping to build up the artist residence program there, after which he established his own studio in the Jingdezhen Sculpture Factory. Such engagement with Chinese culture profoundly shaped his outlook on ceramics and art. He embraced new materials and techniques, pushing boundaries of the ceramics medium. Functionally experimental and aesthetically ambitious, works of his Qing Bai series adopted porcelain clay and Qing Bai glaze specially made in Jingdezhen.
Takeshi’s lecture on recent development of ceramic art in Jingdezhen will be held at Asia Society Hong Kong on 27th November, from 6:45 – 8:30 PM.
Takeshi Yasuda was born in Tokyo in 1943. He is now living and working in Jingdezhen, China. His works are featured in museum collections worldwide, including Crafts Council of Great Britain, Victoria & Albert Museum, Cleveland Crafts Centre, and Ulster Museum Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire. Selected exhibitions include “The Future Table: Peter Ting, Takeshi Yasuda”, Sotheby’s, London, UK (2001); “Collect”, Victoria & Albert Museum, London (2004 & 2006); “Salon International de la Ceramique de Collection”, Paris, France (2007); “2008 International Tsung-Yeh Ceramics Festival”, Tainan, Taiwan (2008); “So Close, Far Away”, Solo Exhibition, Bridge Art Space, Beijing (2013); “Takeshi Yasuda”, Solo Exhibition, Goldmark Gallery, UK (2013).
Since inception in 2013, ZHEN Porcelain has aimed to be the leading platform in China for ceramic artists and designers. The organisation worked closely with artists and designers in providing marketing and media support, curatorship and invite befitting audiences.
