The exhibition is on view from April 19 to May 14, in 9 Queen’s Road Central, Hong Kong.

This new exhibition from the REFLECTIONS series titled “PARTLY FICTION” explores the intentional decisions of artists to tell a truth, their truth, or their idea of the truth . As per Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko and Adolph Gottlieb’s manifesto in the New York Times in 1943 “It is our function as artists to make the spectator see the world our way – not his way.” The idea of art from its origins is rooted in the artist attempting to capture what is around them and make it theirs. Art is often a representation of a moment in time through the eyes of the painter, or simply their personal perspective as it relates to the feelings of the social unconsciousness.

It is partly fiction. Through these ten paintings, the artists as narrator explore their individual interpretations of that truth.

About Matt Black

Matt Black is a Paris born, New York based Curator, Art Advisor and Filmmaker.

Founder of REFLECTIONS, Matt Black seamlessly intertwines art, film and culture for projects around the world. REFLECTIONS began as an insightful series of films focusing on art world luminaries, produced for the award-winning cultural website NOWNESS. The series, which has profiled Rashid Johnson, Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami, among many others, captures the vision and inspiration of each globally renowned artist and immerses us in their singular world. As ARTNET described the films, they are “A remarkable document on the state of the art world”.

Following the REFLECTION film series, Matt released a book with ASSOULINE inspired by his acclaimed series, “Reflections: in conversation with today’s artists”. The book is a compilation of 21 of these conversations with artists, accompanied by new interviews and selected works. The book was launched at the Whitney Museum in New York. Featured in T magazine (The New York Times ), the book is referred to as “a vivid portrait of contemporary art “.

As a curator Matt Black launched REFLECTIONS X Gana Art in Seoul Korea in 2020.The exhibition takes the interviews as its jumping off point and features artists George Condo, KAWS, Angel Otero, Taryn Simon, Rashid Johnson, Sterling Ruby, and numerous others. The 34-artists exhibition is a sprawling and dazzlingly varied look at contemporary art practice, with each artist presenting an individual point of view.

In 2021, Matt Black followed up with REFLECTIONS: OPEN ENDED and REFLECTIONS: HUMAN/NATURE, two exhibitions featuring some of the most exiting new voices including Hilary Pecis, Jenna Gribbon, Ludovic Nkoth, Katherine Bernhardt or Brian Calvin. It followed with “I CARE BECAUSE YOU DO” A Group exhibition at The Mass Gallery in Tokyo featuring artists such as Sayre Gomez, Julie Curtiss, Dan Flavin or Arthur Jaffa.
