Over the Influenceis pleased to present Seaweed Sunrise, a solo exhibition of new paintings by London-based artist Super Future Kid. The exhibition will run from 10 October – 14 November, 2020, with an opening day on October 10 from 11 AM – 7 PM.  This will be Super Future Kid’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong.

Super Future Kid was born in East Germany in 1981. Across her work, the artist reveals a view into her world through a playful lens. Reflecting her ongoing quest of eternal childhood, her high chroma creations show elated views on life and give the viewer a chance to engage with their own childlike senses of wonder and play. Witnessing the fall of the Berlin wall as an eight-year-old inevitably left a lasting impression of late 20th century pop culture on her, that has since been explored through color-drenched characters displaying a range of fleeting emotions—boredom, apprehension, friendship, serenity, and longing; in playful, hyper-surreal landscapes.

In Seaweed Sunrise, Super Future Kid presents a new series of paintings and sculpture exploring this emotional landscape across unconventional dimensions. Like dreams, the works present a distant euphoric time. The artist positions her work between sculpture and paintings, often presenting them together, physically depicting a new dimension for the viewer and subject itself. The artist’s newest works are laced in fluorescent hues, as characters brave new territory, gracefully capturing their pains and hopes in our ever-changing world. The works reflect the tensions and deep uncertainty of the current environment. As the artist found herself constantly torn between the leisurely new pace of the world and its newly imposed restrictions, she sought to replicate this emotional balancing act with her subjects who grapple with the boredom and freedom of too much leisure, escaping the mundane to imaginary new dimensions. The works leave the viewer with a strange sense that something is not quite right, yet they don’t rule out the possibility of hope or happy endings. Seaweed Sunrise draws upon the symbolism of a new day, and a chance for something good to happen with each new beginning.
