The exhibition features the photography works by 13 Japanese artists, exploring the concept of eroticism and its prevalent presence in contemporary Japanese photography. The featured works are divided into four categories which reflect how eroticism is being represented in different forms and styles of photography. Whether the images are voyeuristic or exhibitionistic, provocative or subdued, realist or abstract, staged or candid, these works address different subject matters: from the human body, objects, private life to fantasy. All represent a distinctive aesthetic that speaks of eroticism in contemporary Japanese photography which, as the title “Shikijo” suggests, is perceived and felt rather than defined.
