On the last day of the exhibition, we are happy to present a family friendly event with the reading of Chu Hing Wah Hong Kong Story by Caroline Chiu, art critic and publisher. Fully illustrated with Chu Hing Wah’s drawings and paintings, the children’s book shares his artistic journey and inspiration, as well as his life in Hong Kong. Written in a first person narrative, Chu hopes the book will arouse the creativity of not only children but also those who are interested in the arts. This colourful bilingual storybook published by Tai Kwun Contemporary is available for purchase at the gallery.
About the artist:
Chu Hing-wah, a well-known and beloved Hong Kong artist, is recognised for depicting his life experiences. A self-taught-artist, he started to paint while working as a professional psychiatric nurse in the 1960s. Chu favours subdued colours and stark subjects. His works are without symbolic meanings, but are realistic and expressive. In 1993, Chu was awarded the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship to conduct research in New York City, and in 2018 Alisan showcased his work in the charity exhibition: Asian Cultural Council Fellow’s First Annual Exhibition. Currently, Chu’s works are on exhibition at the Hong Kong Museum of Art’s Classics Remix: The Hong Kong Viewpoint, the museum’s inaugural show after its re-opening last year.
About the speaker:
Caroline Chiu has been involved in the HK art scene for over 30 years with a MA degree in Visual Arts Administration from NYU. She has been working in various galleries in Hong Kong and has also been an art critic for RTHK4’s morning call for over 15 years. She is the co-creator and publisher of the Hong Kong Art Story series published by Tai Kwun Contemporary.
