Whitestone Gallery is pleased to present aspiring Japanese artist Yuji Kanamaru`s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong at Whitestone Gallery Hollywood Road space.
After graduating from Tokyo National University of Arts in 2001, Yuji Kanamaru established a young artists` group called “C-DEPOT” and launched his artist career the following year. Using mixed media of acrylic and mineral pigments on Japanese traditional paper mounted on panel, Kanamaru explores unique ways of creating texture and three dimensionality on his picture plane throughout his career.
Soon became one of the Japan`s most sought-after young artists, Kanamaru`s paintings have a mysterious power to bring out viewer`s memories, and lead them toward unpredicted spectacular scenes of multi layered world of unconsciousness.
From a quick glance, Kanamaru`s works are visually simple and do not need detailed explanations; everyday life motifs like animals, plants and urban streets are creating a warm and dreamy scene. But one more step closer toward the painting, there are different layers of images and colours emerging from Kanamaru`s distinctive matière. Small scrapes of newspapers, burlap collage overlapping by other smaller animals and trees as hidden images, also vivid colour from behind, the layers of those images and colours somehow strike viewer`s childhood nostalgia with a warm sensation. The artist explains those images as fragments of memories; “I randomly drew various things, such as sea horse, tree, umbrella, balloon, and moray on hemp cloth or Newspaper. Those motifs are not always related to each other and are scattered on picture plane as if they were fragmental memories. I hope that they will be connected to unconscious part of viewer`s memories and will work on their deep psyche. Of course, viewer`s first impression of `cute` or `interesting` is a basic premise for my work, but I`m glad if viewers will face it using much time and come into deeper inside of my work with their past memories connected with unconsciousness.”
His personal experiences and memories are re-born as stimulating work which strikes viewers’ imagination and delivers the artist`s warn and embracing reception of the world.
For Kanamaru`s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, the gallery has prepared not only the artist`s paintings but also sculpture and installation pieces to explore unique and multilayered aesthetics of Yuji Kanamaru. We hope the art lovers in Hong Kong can enjoy the artist`s kaleidoscopic fresh point of view that hides deep behind in familiar motifs of Kanamaru`s works.
Based in Tokyo, the artist actively evolves in many gallery and museum exhibitions and art projects.
