About the ‘Residue’ series:
Marcel Heijnen has innovated a simple yet unique & imaginative method to capture and present an alternate visual reality of our world. He roams Asia’s urban centres to find weathered walls, then places his large glass panel in front of them. He waits for the light to hit nearby buildings just right so he can steal their glimpses off the glass, emphasizing the patina of the wall. Two realities collapsed into one. Capturing solely what is there at that very moment.
In these dreamlike visions, it feels like the organic distress is happening to the architecture itself, and that is precisely the point. The future that contains its past, the past that reveals its future, and there is only one moment to experience that – right now, in the present.
‘Residue’ is about duality & paradox. Old versus new, geometric versus organic, and urbanisation versus nature – tensions that ultimately lead to some state of equilibrium, like a perpetual dance between decay & renewal.

‘NUDE STUDIES 裸體研究’ explores the age-old fixation by artists to represent the human body specifically through the lens of three current photographers. All practice within the analog domain and yet their work manifests in unique forms. From the Grand Master of the minimal black & white aesthetic, Michael Kenna breaks new ground by photographing the human figure for the first time but not without his signature style. For colour and the vital female gaze we turn to Au Tze Long whose intimate and deeply personal works move between stories, dreams, ritual and reality, whispering of life’s inherent messiness and pain. Ben Felten’s project on photosynthesis marriages content and technique as his double exposures of plants on nudes come to life through cyanotype printing which are developed in sunlight.

Living and working in Hong Kong for the past 7 years, Cyril captures the unique, mixed spirit of the city. His work explores the city’s contrasting rhythms, where slowness meets speed, and the past meets the present.
WALK DON’T WALK
I caught people lost in their thoughts at the crosswalk.
Stripped of any representation of themselves, they simply wait. I observe them as if they were on stage, each one carrying a thousand stories.
Time is suspended, it is an irreducible wait.
They are almost motionless. Between them and my lens, the flow of trams and buses creates a veil.
I try to contrast the speed of the city to the suspended time of the individuals, stopped in their tracks for this short moment.
For me, this is a symbolic image of Hong Kong, where the times overlap. – Cyril Delettre
WILD CITY
My photographic walks in Hong Kong have led me to play with the streets. I have invited the ink paintings of Grand So, a street artist on Hollywood Road whom I meet daily, into my photographs. I wanted to animate the walls captured in my photographs with his animals on recycled paper, mixing contemporary Western architecture with traditional Chinese animals, concrete with paper, urban pollution with recycled materials, my gaze in motion with his timeless work.
It is a game on the mixing of times, places, and cultures; it is an image of the richness of the encounter.

Leo Gallery is proud to present the debut Hong Kong solo exhibition of German artist, Patricia Waller. As a renowned knitwork master in Europe, Ms Waller is the first artist who uses crochet art to present avant-garde and modern cold humour in European art history.
Born with a German way of reflective mind, Ms Waller put forward a question in the early 1990s: can art get rid of the shackles of conventional techniques or machinery and return to handcrafts? At the time when virtual art is the main stream, should the value of manual work be regained? Ms Waller’s choice is crochet art, but she said: “To be honest, I don’t know even how to knit a pair of socks.” So what is she knitting? Humanity, she said. With different varieties of “humanities” knitted by her magical needle, she faces the inner abyss in a very gentle way. Her works are amused at first sight, bloody and cruel at the second, but also convincing when you look at it at the third glance. Her works have been collected by numbers of renowned collectors and museums in Europe.

The exhibition will feature works from the Meta Memphis collections shown alongside Italian art, blurring the boundaries between art and design.1989 saw the launch of the Meta Memphis collection, an innovative experiment that involved no longer designers, but internationally renowned artists engaged in the design of objects and furniture.
Inspired by the Greek word metamorphosis (transformation), the collection rethinks the ways and archetypes of living sedimented in the collective memory through conceptual reappraisals and unusual formal, material, and functional associations.
Alighiero Boetti handwrites the hours on the Orogio wall clock in italics, making it illegible. Michelangelo Pistoletto hones down a piece of furniture to its outline, to the point of making it unusable. Franz West creates poetic and unstable pieces using recycled metal materials: the iron rod chair or the stiffened chain lamp. Together they blur the lines between art and design.

Ora-Ora is delighted to present Kapok20, a solo exhibition by Halley Cheng. The exhibition opens on March 13 until May 29, 2021.
Centred on Cheng’s new Kapok Series, the resonating dichotomy of kapok tree flowers takes form in an emblem of his emotional journey over the course of the past year to present day. Of deciduous nature, kapok flowers with their transient presence, appear after rainy periods, and with some luck, only a few would fully bloom, reaching their peak blossoming pinks and blood-reds. The red hue forms a symbolic thread across Cheng’s narratives – touching upon societal combat and strife that innately becomes a daily reminder of his experiences. Raw, lying splattered on the pavement, tread upon – such unidentifiable kapok forms incite the artist’s own introspection and nostalgia. A familiar icon to the people of Hong Kong, Cheng manipulates the subject to delineate personal reflection, collective experience, the pandemic, and the political underpinnings. With the diffusion of these trampled florets, it is a therapeutic revelation on Cheng’s part; one is encouraged to heuristically survey our world and our social relationships within it.

Soluna Fine Art is pleased to present Kim Young-Hun’s solo exhibition ‘Electronic Nostalgia’. This exhibition showcases vibrantly colored oil paintings by the artist that are inspired by the Korean landscape and digital screen glitches.
Living through the transition between the analog generation and digital generation, Kim Young-Hun is passionate in observing and deciphering the unknown between the 1 and 0 of binary codes. For Kim, such incomprehensibility intrigues him to create disoriented and euphoric paintings: Inspirations such as stripe covered light bulbs, white noise from digital screens, and invisible vibrations from string instruments allow Kim’s works, in his wordings, to “…generate an electronic-like abstract painting language that interferes with some parts of the ambiguous boundaries of our ever-changing digital or reality lives”.

The exhibition aims to take the audience through the journey of our artists’ attempt to connect the east and west through their unique art form. Watanabe Mitsuru and Kawai Takuhiro are taking their protagonists for trip to the Rousseau’s forest and Bosch‘s last judgement day. Kang Yongfeng and Wang Yigang are creating new awareness and understanding towards life with the bold and disorderly brush strokes, trying to redefine abstract paintings with a new oriental identity. Cindy Ng uses Chinese ink and western painting technique to explore the wonder of nature, while bridging the gap between tradition and contemporaneity and between aesthetic and conceptual needs.
Our exhibition is about transformation, progress and balance between the East and West.

In participation with Le French May Arts Festival 2021, Alisan Fine Arts is proud to present “Chinese Surrealism” at Alisan Aberdeen. This exhibition is a response to the French Surrealist exhibition which will take place at the Hong Kong Museum of Art in collaboration with the Pompidou Museum as part of Le French May Arts Festival this year.
Alisan’s exhibition will feature the works of six artists, with a focus on young Hong Kong women artists. They include ink painters Cherie Cheuk Ka-wai and Zhang Xiaoli; emerging artists Ant Ngai Wing-lam and Charlotte Mui, the latter who will be exhibiting her colourful mythological works on paper for the first time in a commercial gallery. The other two artists are well known Hong Kong sculptor Mok Yat-San and international sculptor Wu Shaoxiang. These artists have been selected specifically because they are inspired and interested in Surrealist ideas and imagery such as, dreamscapes and the exploration of the unconscious mind. Using a contemporary Chinese lens, they will portray surrealism with their individual technique and media. The Western surrealist artists they are taking inspiration from include Rene Magritte, Salvador Dali, Man Ray, Alberto Giacometti, Giorgio Chirico and Joan Miro.
During the duration of the exhibition, Alisan Aberdeen will be open every Friday & Saturday 10am-6 pm. All other times are by appointment only.

“Every Colour is Blessed” Solo Exhibition by Ng Lung Wai

The Art Projects Gallery presents the latest works by Ng Lung Wai (b.1971) in the solo exhibition titled “Every Colour is Blessed”. Ng Lung Wai is known for his origami folded using acrylic paint, a technique that he created. Ng initiates these series of folding paint work by questioning the possibilities and the definitions of painting. The unique technique creates works that borders between the 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional states.
The folded clothes series are featured in this exhibition. Ng questions the philosophical meaning of colors in the sense of aesthetics, gender and social norms. Ng Lung Wai tries to see colours in a personified way, giving values to every color that human perceives.
According to Ng, the color selections in his artworks are inspired by the colour palette of Tibetan Prayer Flags that symbolises and promotes peace, compassion, strength and wisdom. Tibetans believe that the prayers will spread to the world along with the flow of the wind, a philosophy that Ng resonates with. Ng aspires to spread blessings to the world through his art. The exhibition will be held at Art Projects Gallery from 15 May – 3 Jul 2021.

REMEMBER THEM? Old Businesses in Hong Kong through Eyes of Artists

Economic development in the 1960s to 1970s evolved Hong Kong from a small fishing village to a confluence of Chinese and Western culture, with grocery stores in alleys, rickshaws on the streets, nightlife dance halls and floating restaurants. Through our “Remember them? — Old Businesses in Hong Kong through Eyes of Artists” Exhibition, four renowned Hong Kong artists from different generations and creative styles — Au Yeung Nai Chim, Shen Ping, Cassian Lau and Wai Wai celebrate the city’s long-forgotten and disappearing businesses from the 1960s and 1970s. Evoking nostalgia with every stroke, their creations of seemingly ordinary and everyday Hong Kong scenes take viewers on a journey through the city’s history and the craftsmen, merchants and shopkeepers who played key roles in its social and economic life. Through this exhibition, the artists build a bridge from past to present, reconnecting people with Hong Kong’s old businesses, allowing their stories to live on.

Axel Vervoordt Gallery Hong Kong is pleased to present Dutch artist Germaine Kruip’s first solo exhibition in the Greater China region. Kruip has been developing a practice that merges time, space and perception. In between the visual arts, the stage, and architecture, she investigates and presents her observations through architectural, sculptural and performative interventions. Kruip studies the scenography of ungraspable phenomena, such as the ever-changing daylight and the passage of time; the relationship between art and ritual in repetitive gestures, aiming to subtly alter perception; historical attempts to create abstraction by means of geometry – and finally the desires, theories and ideologies underlying these attempts.

The concept for this show is based on the exhibition organised by Michael in 1998 at the Musée Maillol in Paris under the title L’Ecole de Londres de Bacon à Bevan, which traced the influence of Bacon, Freud, Auerbach and Kossoff on the younger generation of figurative artists working in London.

‘Shape of Water’s is a group exhibition presented by Edouard Malingue Gallery which is part of GALLERIES CURATE, a collaborative project designed to express the dynamic dialogue between individual programmes. RHE (from Greek for that which flows) is a platform for exhibitions, performances, and public interventions that loosely address the theme of water—geographically, politically, economically or metaphorically. Involving projects with twenty-one galleries, both online and on-site, RHE was conceived to span regions, markets, cultures, and audiences around the world, circulating both within and outside of traditional white-box exhibition spaces. Featured in ‘Shape of Water’ are works by Ko Sin Tung, Kwan Sheung Chi, Lai Chih-Sheng and Wang Wei.

Edouard Malingue is pleased to present an exhibition of Nabuqi’s works showcasing for the first time the artist’s silkscreen prints, sculptural works from A View Beyond Space series, and a new sculpture Game and the Importance of the Joints, created in 2020. For more than a decade, Nabuqi has been recognised for her persevering exploration of profound and uncanny sculptural and spatial forms. Nabuqi was born 1984 in Inner Mongolia, China. She graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2013, and currently lives and works in Beijing. Her recent exhibitions include 58th Venice Biennale (Venice, 2019); Cold Nights (UCCA Art Centre, 2017); Absent Paragraph (Museum Beelden aan Zee, 2017); Any Ball (Central Academy of Fine Arts, 2017), The 11th Shanghai Biennale (2016) and the 10th Gwangju Biennale (2016). She has been nominated for the 2016 Art Sanya Huayu Youth Award.

Empty Gallery is pleased to present Tailwhip, a historical overview of the activities of Cantonese artist, noise musician, organizer, and raconteur, Xper.Xr. Comprising performance documentation, archival photographs, scores, props, and other ephemera, Tailwhip attempts to pull back the curtain on this obscure yet vital presence within the counter-cultural history of our city.
Always cognizant of his déclassé position, Xper.Xr forged a highly personal form of anti-art through his mingling of pop-cultural detritus, dadaist spectacle, and self-lacerating humor. Taking a roughly chronological approach to Xper’s practice, the show begins with his early years of activity in Hong Kong, winding through time spent in London and Paris – where he flirted with art-world professionalism at Goldsmiths, wreaked havoc at Comme des Garçons, and courted the experimental music world– before returning, in pendular fashion, to where things started.
The exhibition is accompanied by a sitting room-cum-lounge on our lower floor, where visitors can listen to a Megamix of Xper.Xr’s discography– including unreleased rarities and live recordings.

L+/ Lucie Chang Fine Arts is pleased to present the duo exhibition “Pleasure Land”, showcasing two prominent graffiti artists XEME and WAIS at the gallery’s newly opened art space in Wong Chuk Hang. Both artists started painting at the beginning of the 21st century. XEME has long become an eminent name, bombing the streets of Hong Kong with an ever-evolving style, from traditional tags to Chinese calligraphy to pixelated words and images. As a leader in Hong Kong and Asia’s graffiti scene, he is also keen on promoting graffiti culture through publications, art festivals, and graffiti competitions, whilst collaborating with various artists for astonishing inspirations. On the other hand, two-time Write4Gold winner, Russian graffiti artist WAIS has been active in St. Petersburg and Hong Kong with his distinctive layered style, and his signature work at The Pulse in Repulse Bay and Square Street Sheung Wan has attracted floods of visitors all year round. Apart from their own creation, they are frequently invited by street art festivals worldwide and private corporations to paint murals. From walls to canvas, what doesn’t change is their pursuit of excellence and innovation through playing with elements including colors, shapes, and textures. Pleasure Land marks the debut exhibition of the duo and is surely a must-go for art lovers in the city.

10 Chancery Lane Gallery is proud to present Hong Kong born, Australian artist John Young in Spectrumfigures from April 23rd-May 29, 2021.
This Spring in Hong Kong and during Art Basel HK 2021, John Young will be exhibiting a group of abstract paintings entitled Spectumfigures, as well as a small group of works he created thirteen years ago — 1967 Dispersion; a recollection of the 1967 riots in Hong Kong, the time he departed the then British colony.
Spectrumfigures, a series of spectrum-based coloured abstracts that celebrate the evolution of consciousness in the younger generation of Hong Kongers of the twenty-first century. The dispersion of radiant light through a prism produces a plurality of colours that mark this generation as a spirited generation of many qualities.
The Spectrumfigures are produced by a unique process whereby Young downloads a thousand photographic images from the internet daily, algorithms transform these photographic images into abstract images – one will then be chosen from the thousand, and caringly painted up through jurassic but intricate oil painting techniques. It is what Young terms ‘Human-Technology Friendship’ paintings, a hope for the reciprocity between the cerebral strength of technology and the viscerality evoked by oil painting. This ironic title is derived from the name of a German electro-punk band in the 80’s Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft (or German-American Friendship).

In celebration of its 10th anniversary, 3812 Gallery is pleased to present a three-part exhibition titled ‘After Nature’, opening in Hong Kong in May, June and July 2021. These three exhibitions will place work by leading Chinese and British artists alongside one another, as well as Hong Kong ink works by our 3812 artists, aiming to explore what unites them and makes them distinctive, to create a conversation between the East and West.
The first part, opening in May, will present major British Abstract Expressionist painter Albert Irvin alongside Chinese abstract artist Li Lei. Irvin’s great abstract paintings are celebrations of paint and cityscapes, while Li’s Poetic Abstraction painting is a reflection of the artist’s “mindscape”, demonstrating his profound cultural understanding of Chinese aesthetics and thoughts, whilst drawing upon dynamic features of western abstract expressionism.

Alisan Fine Arts is honoured to announce our fourth solo exhibition for the renowned Chinese-French abstract artist, Chu Teh-Chun for Le French May, the first was in 1997. Chu studied watercolour and oil painting at the National Academy of Art under Lin Fengmian, alongside two other important artists Zao Wou-ki and Wu Guanzhong. Chu’s signature abstract style came to be in 1956, after he moved to Paris and he attended a major exhibition of works by French artist, Nicolas de Staël, who is known for his abstract landscapes. His works are celebrated for his integration of traditional Chinese painting techniques including calligraphy with Western abstract art.

MASSIMODECARLO is pleased to present Empire of cotton – the Buddha, the first exhibition of Zhao Zhao with the gallery.
The show will present a new series of paintings and a newly produced video work.
In the body of work, Zhao Zhao reinterprets his strong links to the Buddhism doctrine through a painting intended as a multidisciplinary language. Indeed, the series consists of both works in which minimalist and geometric forms appear linked to the symbolism of the Buddhist religion and works in which calligraphy is used as a means to bring the viewer closer to portraits and the figure of the Buddha.
Zhao Zhao was born in Xinjiang, China, in 1982. He graduated from the Department of Oil Painting with a BFA from the Xinjiang Institute of Arts in 2003. He worked as Ai Weiwei’s assistant before he became an influential artist of the young Post-80s generation of contemporary Chinese artists.

VILLEPIN is pleased to announce an exhibition featuring work by the Korean artist Myonghi Kang.
Myonghi Kang’s idyllic canvases offer an intimate view into the elusive heart of her artistic pursuit: a faith in painting and drawing as a medium capable of profoundly reinforcing our relationship with the natural world. Moving with ease between abstraction and figuration, the artist reflects on questions of perception, embodiment and understanding, while offering viewers a new experience of time, space, and color. Through cosmic landscapes, her command of colors, marks and shapes convey a sense of exuberance, peace and joy.
For over five decades, the artist has continuously sought new ways to represent nature on paper and canvas in a practice that involves painting, poetry as well as philosophy. The works on view in the exhibition vary dramatically in scale yet they share an immediacy that results from the artist’s familiar and fluent engagement with oils and pastels. The gallery will be transformed into a meditative sanctuary to complement the artist’s work, providing a hideaway from the hustle and bustle of city life, and allowing visitors to become immersed in her visual language.
After arriving in Paris from South Korea in 1972, a stay in the city’s Quai de la Loire surrounded by tranquil canals inspired a shift in focus from political themes to an in-depth appreciation of nature. She belonged to a close community of artists, writers, and philosophers, developing friendships with Zao Wou-Ki, Dominique de Villepin, Alain Jouffroy and Piotr Kowalski. Their friendships sparked collaborations on poetry and further exhibitions in France, China, and South Korea. Drawing from her extensive travels from Sicily to Mongolia and down to Patagonia, Myonghi Kang evokes a timeless sense of illumination from when man and nature used to be one. The artist is now based in Jeju, South Korea where her studio is surrounded by lush natural landscapes that continue to inspire her work.
“For over nearly five decades, Myonghi Kang has continuously sought new ways to capture our world which is in constant transformation and often threatened by extinction. Her art represents a sanctuary in which a lively dialogue is still possible between us and nature. That is why we wanted to share the ultimate experience of her creations with the people of Hong Kong, immersing ourselves in her inner world and discovering her works through her own eyes,” comments Arthur de Villepin, co-founder of VILLEPIN.
“Myonghi is a true medicine-woman. Through her infinite display of colors, her paintings contain an embodied spirit that can cure the soul.
