He first applies paint to the back of the paper in order to revive its serenity and plainness; simultaneously, he preserves the less saturated areas of hanji that is due to the natural entanglement of plant fiber. For this solo exhibition, Soluna Fine Art will organize an Artist Talk. This event will provide a wonderful opportunity for audience to gain insights into his unique creative process. She was remarkable for paving new possibilities in Chinese ink painting through a highly original abstract visual language, and her exploration of modern themes informed by metaphysics, science, religion and literature, as well as her personal outlook on life. Exhibition | Very Natural Actions

The value, social function, and role of art change with time. Contemporary art has shifted towards life itself, away from “art for art’s sake”, where art is viewed in isolation as objects of pure aesthetic inquiry. Artists are thrust into the world and in turn create their own worlds; the persistent focus on the surfaces of artworks breaks down, unveiling deeper meanings. Very Natural Actions encourages viewers not to linger on the surfaces of works but to seek out that gem of a tree within the forest of forms and meanings — one that resonates with one’s experiences, allowing artworks to serve as bridges between artists and viewers. Beneath the artworks lie worlds and dimensions ordinarily hidden; such reflexive questioning holds out greater possibilities in the viewing of artworks.

Exhibition | Phantom Plane, Cyberpunk in the Year of the Future

In 2019, the year of the future in films such as Blade Runner and Akira, we find ourselves stuck in a world where cyberpunk fictions have become a reality: our bodies have merged with our devices; our society is beholden to unchecked corporate greed; our sprawling cities are starkly divided between haves and have-nots.
Phantom Plane, Cyberpunk in the Year of the Future examines how the genre’s aesthetics and futurisms have also bled into art and visual culture. The exhibition centres around what the influential science fiction author William Gibson called “the meta-city,” a sprawling urban space just as virtual as it is real. Whether through spectacular panoramas of virtual mega cities, or fleeting snapshots of their alluring underworlds and dissonant denizens, the exhibition explores life in the meta-city, and how the cyber metropolis has transformed from a fantastic metaphor for life in the future into an inescapable, looping present.

Concert | SAATH-SAATH: MUSIC ACROSS THE WATERS 2019

What happens when Indian and Chinese musicians meet? Are they able to overcome the lack of a shared language? Can they communicate through voice and melody? Do they simply perform ‘their own music’ or can they actually create new music together? Those musical crossings date back to the 6th century, a good 1400 years ago. That’s when musical scales in China were transformed under the influence of Indian or South Asian music.

Sadly, we don’t know enough about those old connections between musicians in India and China. And that is where the Saath-Saath project comes in. Working between Bangalore, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing, we have been finding ways of promoting encounters between musicians, and experimenting with both form and content to electrifying effect. Saath-Saath brings together Hindustani vocalists, Chinese instrumentalists and singers, Cantopop lyricists, composers, and scholars from India, Hong Kong and China.

What does a Chinese dadra sound like? How does a Chinese folk singer present a Hindustani bandish? How do Hindustani vocalists render a medieval Chinese lyric? And what impact have they had on the Cantopop music scene in Hong Kong? Come and listen to musicians who pick up the threads lost centuries ago to make vibrant new melodies.
