On Mermaid & Bird
24 Mar – 26 Apr, 2026
I.F. Gallery

I.F. Gallery is pleased to present On Mermaid and Bird, the artist’s debut exhibition outside of Japan. On view from March 24th 2026 to April 26th 2026, the exhibition features her newest body of sculptural works, expanding upon the artist’s wider multimedia based practice exploring themes of fate and universality, structured around two series: The Woman with Terrestrial Malady and The Party of Good Sense.

R E M A is best known for her large-scale sculptural works in sand, through which she explores the self as a conduit through which one experiences existence, fate and themes universal to the human experience. Her works teem with an introspective depth, positioning herself as a withdrawn observer, R E M A explores phenomena that are paradoxically universal but also deeply personal. As a self proclaimed “outgoing introvert”, the artist draws from the experience of her solitary lifestyle, thus she often uses the self as a primary visual subject in her work but situates the conceptual foundation of a work towards external universal concepts.

This is seen in her series The Woman with Terrestrial Malady, where self-image is utilized in a more abstract manner. The works depict a faceless mermaid figure, a symbol of mystery, seduction and apocalypse, adorned with constellations and intricate symbols across cultures. The series explores how the forces of fate, societal perception and myths act upon the self simultaneously constructing and erasing one's identity, rendering it an amorphous construct that is constantly in flux.

In The Party of Good Sense, R E M A interrogates her unresolved and ongoing fascination with “contemporary numbness”, a state of awareness—being physically and emotionally distanced, yet critically attentive to that distance itself. She began this exploration after observing her own condition of having become numb to life, to sensation, and to the ethical frameworks that surround them. Using the amalgamated chimeric forms of a bird and human figures, she explores the fractured human relationship with nature and myth in the modern day as a possible source of this numbness.

Throughout her works, R E M A has constructed a distinct visual lexicon to give form to the ruminations of her inner world. Her works at once universal and autobiographical serve as intimate meditations of the human condition in the modern day.
