Aquatint and Artist Book Workshop

23 May, 2026

2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Aquatint is one of the intaglio techniques most capable of expressing tonal variation and subtle shifts between light and shadow. Compared with line etching, its fine granular dots and smooth gradations form a distinctive visual language, often infusing an image with a quiet, atmospheric haze.

In "The Black Dog and its Shades", emerging printmaker Jeannie Wong Ho-ching uses aquatint to render the soft light filtering through curtains, the faint glow of candlelight, and the deep silhouette of a black dog. The work captures a subtle interaction between the animal and its surrounding space, conveying a sense of distilled memory and delicate texture.

In this six-session workshop, Jeannie Wong will guide participants through aquatint alongside other intaglio etching techniques, leading them to create richly layered prints. The course also introduces bookbinding, encouraging participants to combine their prints with text or other forms of works and develop them into artist books.
