Cho Wing Ki x Lau Yin Yeung: Between Gaze and Mist
2 Aug – 6 Sep, 2025
SC Gallery

SC Gallery will present "Between Gaze and Mist", the duo exhibition of Cho Wing Ki and Lau Yin Yeung featuring their latest body of works. The two artists share distinctive lifestyles and artistic expression. For this exhibition, they interpret everyday lives through their own unique lenses, exploring the relationship between them and the external environment.

Cho’s practice focuses on the communities she observes in her daily life. Her works often depict places within her living circle, such as parks, pedestrian bridges, and swimming pools, as well as the interactions between people. Cho intentionally flattens the space to bring the foreground and background closer together, and by using a high-staturation color palette she paints public spaces that feel inviting. By presenting vibrant and closely-knit community scenes, she explores her stance in the society. In this exhibition, Cho's observations of the external environment stem from a more personal viewpoint: watching the rain with dogs at home, accompanying children to sketch the landscape afar, and a swimmer looking at the sea from the shade. The perspective of her paintings extends from "interior" to "exterior," guiding the audience to step into the painting. Gazing at the distant scenery, as if a new world awaits.

Lau's artworks primarily feature local landscapes. Ranging from nature to the narrow streets of Hong Kong, mountains and clouds, boats, or man-made objects at street corners, are all subjects of his work. Lau employs classical Western oil painting techniques: first painting the image in monochrome as base layer, then applying thin coats of color after drying. Through precise composition and meticulous handling of light and shadow, he constructs landscape paintings that evoke vastness and serenity. Apart from showcasing landscapes, Lau also includes more relatable imagery, such as his pet cat at home. The artist has delved into Buddhist philosophy in recent years, contemplating that thematic coherence is not the priority of his creation. Instead, he believes that seemingly unrelated subjects are all interconnected. Through painting, the transformation process of random images let him explore the origination of his surroundings; akin to a boat navigating through misty seas, seeking the ocean amid the waves.
