JPS Gallery Hong Kong unveils “Encounter,” a soul-stirring solo exhibition by Hong Kong artist Jackie Lam a.k.a. 009. The gallery is transformed into a luminous harbour where his signature cosmic travellers float through the exhibition space as silent witnesses to both earthly beauty and celestial wonder. With quiet grace, these enigmatic figures navigate emotional landscapes that mirror our own, creating visual poetry that speaks to our deepest yearning: to be truly seen and understood by another soul.

TIDES OF TRANSFORMATION
“The sea has always been my sanctuary,” Jackie reveals. “Whenever I face the ocean, my heart grows calm and I can release long-suppressed emotions. This exhibition explores how we might find similar sanctuaries in our connections with others.”

For followers of Jackie’s artistic voyage, “Encounter” represents a significant evolution. His enigmatic character Unio—previously seen traversing star-filled dreamscapes—now navigates more nuanced emotional territories. The recurring motif of the sea serves as both a literal setting and a powerful metaphor, its rhythms and moods reflecting the complex nature of human bonds—unpredictable yet constant, powerful yet tender, vast yet intimate.

MEDIUMS IN ORBIT
The exhibition reveals Jackie’s artistic versatility across various mediums. Alongside his signature canvas works, Jackie unveils his photography series—a breathtaking new direction making its Hong Kong debut. Beginning with intimate photographs of local coastlines where waves meet concrete and urban landscapes where humanity pulses, Jackie transforms these captured moments by painting his astronaut figures directly onto the printed images. This delicate intervention creates a poignant dialogue between documented reality and artistic vision, revealing islands of connection amid urban solitude.

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE
At the heart of the exhibition stands an immersive installation that suspends time and space. Dozens of glass bottles hang from the ceiling like stars in a night sky, each containing handwritten messages reminiscent of notes cast into the vast sea.

As light filters through glass and paper, these crystallised moments of human vulnerability cast gentle shadows across the gallery floor, inviting visitors to physically experience the exhibition’s themes as they move through this forest of suspended emotions.

LIGHTHOUSES IN THE DIGITAL STORM
“I hope viewers can temporarily set aside life’s constant noise and discover their own stories within my works,” says Jackie. “Just as I find peace facing the sea, I hope they find unexpected resonance here—whether our feelings align or differ.”

In our screen-dominated world, “Encounter” offers something increasingly precious—art that celebrates the quiet magic of genuine human connection, whether across a table, a city, or the universe of our hearts. The exhibition creates a space where shared vulnerability opens doorways to authentic healing, where cosmic travellers and earthbound souls might, for a moment, recognise themselves in each other.
