Fung, Lik-yan Kevin Retrospective Exhibition

Leo Gallery Hong Kong is honoured to present “Fung, Lik-yan Kevin Retrospective Exhibition”, commemorating the journey and artistic legacy of the celebrated sculptor who passed away this March. The exhibition, running from 29 May to 16 June, traces Fung's expansive artistic profile from his iconic wood sculpture series Migratory Bird and Herd to other seminal works including Summation of Choices, Groping for Stone to…, In the Web, Habitat and more. The display culminates with Fung's final work In the Name of Art with artist and friend Vince Chan under the duo entity KeVince, presented alongside rarely seen sketches that shed light on his creative process.

Fung's artistic journey is particularly compelling, considering his professional background as a telecommunications engineer. Transitioning to a full-time artistic career in 2011, Fung's path is both cogent and reflective of predecessors from earlier decades. His engineering career not only fuelled his artistic practice but also contributed to the empathetic yet whimsical quality in his work. His works were collected by prominent institutions and private collections such as the Hong Kong Museum of Art and Ogilvy Beijing, and featured in public spaces like the MTR, Taikoo Place, MegaBox, Salisbury Garden, Legislative Council Complex and more.

The exhibition will open with an intimate sharing session to commemorate Fung’s personal and creative course, where family, friends, and members of the art community are invited to share personal memories and anecdotes on the artist whose work deeply captured the spirit of Hong Kong city dwellers while offering fresh perspectives on the human condition.

“Kevin's passing is undeniably a great loss for Hong Kong's art scene,” says Leo Li, Founder of Leo Gallery. “Yet through his works – which so powerfully represent the lives of our city's working and middle classes – his passionate spirit continues to inspire us. This retrospective offers not just an appreciation of Fung's exceptional craftsmanship and aesthetic vision, but also an opportunity to reflect on the societal and existential themes that defined his practice.”

Fung's collaborator Vince Chan adds: "Kevin's works not only reveal profound meditation on both artistic practice and human existence, but also his humility as both an artist and an individual. This exhibition carefully presents his artistic journey from his early days as a promising engineer to his transition as a full-time artist in the early 2010s, concluding with his final collaborative piece, which holds special significance in both mentorship and creative partnership."

“A Retrospective of Fung, Lik-yan Kevin” will be on view at Leo Gallery Hong Kong from 29 May to 16 June.
